Peace Begins With Me

KIDS ROCK!!

Picture
Kids love to laugh, play games, and just have fun everywhere they go! They are naturally compassionate, curious, and creative. Children learn through movement, touch, and physical experience. So wait, don't we do all that in yoga? Yes! That's why yoga is so great for children & why they naturally adapt so well to a yoga practice. Yoga is a discipline that opens kids up to developing balance and strength, reducing anxiety, improving memory/focus, & improving social skills in a safe, non-competitive environment. For more benefits, see the next page :). For what to expect in a typical class, click here.

Katie teaches yoga to children, adults, & everyone in between! She brings a unique background of working with children both of school age and early childhood, as well as taking many child development classes since 2008. Katie Rose is a Licensed Kidding Around Yoga Instructor & models her classes after this style. Kidding Around Yoga is a style of yoga that was created by Haris "Harini" Lender, E-RYT-500. Haris has been writing songs and developing unique ways of teaching yoga to children since 2000. KAY includes ALL 5 branches of the Science of Yoga in a very clear and organized class. In a typical KAY class the children are singing, dancing, jogging, laughing, playing games, and storytelling ALL while practicing yoga. It is SO much fun--your little one will LOVE it!!! More information about Kidding Around Yoga can be found at www.kiddingaroundyoga.com.

WHY KIDS YOGA?

Why should kids practice yoga?
Let’s face it; we live in a hustle-bustle world. Kids are exposed to stress very early on with busy parents, siblings, various lessons, shopping, and competitive sports. Come on, those things are fun, right? Often the busy nature of our activities is stressful for kids, not fun. This can affect their overall natural joy & we as parents don’t want them to lose that, do we? Yoga can help counteract these pressures.

Benefits:
* Yoga builds strength, flexibility, and balance.
* Yoga exercises can improve concentration, focus, attention, & build imagination.
* Yoga helps improve memory & ability to follow directions.
* Benefits the metabolism, circulation, respiration, digestion, and immune response!
* Inner strength & body awareness
* Confidence & self-esteem improve as your child masters new skills.
* Yoga helps children relax & manage stress!!
* Yoga can help improve overall sense of well-being and respect for others.
* Yoga teaches children to have FUN in a non-competitive environment!

What’s in it for the parents?
When your children practice yoga, you get to witness their pride in themselves as they move in a new way or try something new. Yoga is fun and children feel joyful while practicing—you get to hear their laughter! Yoga creates an environment for your child to thrive in their unique way and emerge as their best self. Active children eat better, sleep better, struggle less with depression and self-image issues, and live more balanced and healthy lives as adults.

There are many books & videos (and NOW local classes!) on yoga for children (as well as adults) that are interactive and could be done as a family bonding activity. Yoga can be worked into daily routines in as little as a minute several times a day.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A KIDS' YOGA CLASS:

Picture
Kids’ Yoga is sooo much fun!! In any given class, children may be found jogging, dancing, singing songs, playing games, playing instruments, acting like animals, and just having a GREAT time! While acting crazy and moving their bodies in new ways, children are still taught the true science of yoga. Through partner poses and games they are also taught to cooperate and treat others with respect and kindness.

All the elements of a typical adult class are also taught in your child’s yoga class: asana (postures), pranayama (breath control exercises), meditation, relaxation, and how to use mantras (short, positive phrases used to calm & focus the mind). Not only are they taught all these elements, they are also taught WHY they are important and some benefits of each!

In a 60-minute class, children are very active for about 40 minutes followed by a relaxation, encouraging them to use their imagination and honor their bodies with rest. Preschool classes vary in length depending on age, and still include a relaxation time at the end.

Family Yoga classes are structured similarly to Kids’ Yoga classes with a little more opportunity for family partnering/group activities and maybe some mat-sharing in relaxation at the end! Lots of photo ops!

WHAT TO BRING:

Katie travels with a limited supply of mats when teaching on location.
  •  yoga mat
  • water
  • wear comfy clothes
  • a POSITIVE attitude
Yoga classes are taught with bare feet.
