My Yoga Story
My yoga journey began when I was pregnant with my son in 2008, and grew as I began utilizing it with children during my years as an early childhood educator. I knew it made a difference in how my students and I felt physically, it seemed to support better moods, and I craved more. I began attending some classes locally for about 2 years before I pursued yoga training. Yoga helps me to find presence in a distracted world. It helps me feel connected to my body, to others, and to God. Connecting my faith practice with my yoga practice has been important to me, and I love sharing them together. It was through yoga I have met many beautiful souls who have formed my journey as a yoga student, teacher, and human. I met my great love, Jared, through yoga, and we love sharing our practice together.
My Yoga Training & Work
My first training was a 200-hour Yoga & Self-Awareness training with Anna Pittman of The Breathing Space in Blacksburg, VA. We met for 15 life-changing weekends, and I wouldn’t trade that time or the lessons learned for anything.
In 2012 I trained with Kidding Around Yoga’s creator, Haris Lender. That weekend opened up the ride of a lifetime as I began teaching Kids Yoga all over the Tri-State, recording a kids yoga song, helping with content design for future live & online trainings, working as a teacher trainer, blogging, and meeting many wonderful friends. This led to opportunities to teach live courses to WV educators and counselors in several counties on how to use mindfulness and yoga with students.
I did my Advanced Yoga Training (300-hr) in Asheville, NC at the Asheville Yoga Center as an immersion in 2013. Living yoga daily for 7 weeks was an invaluable experience. Training with world-class instructors in a variety of styles opened a world of teaching opportunity. It was there I learned Yin, Restorative, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Bhakti/Jivamukti, Prenatal/Postnatal, Iyengar, Senior, Therapeutic applications, various meditation techniques, hands on assists, and so much more.
I have continued my education with companies/courses like Broga Yoga (Functional fitness + HIIT + Yoga flow), Yahweh Yoga (Christian Yoga), Yoga for 12-Step Recovery, Trina Altman of Yoga Deconstructed. I recently attended a Yoga, Psychology & Trauma course in Asheville that was valuable for teaching classes in a trauma-informed way. I love to learn, and continue seeking opportunities via books, online, and in live workshops.
n 2015, Katie became certified to teach Broga Yoga, and began working with the company as their Online Education Director. Here she dove into marketing, copy writing, and certified about 200 teachers to share this combination of functional fitness, traditional yoga, high intensity interval training, breath, and mindfulness. Katie is grateful for the opportunity to publish an article representing Broga Yoga in Yoga Journal in May 2016.
Katie began serving as the Lead Trainer for Eternal Yoga Teacher Academy's 200-hour Teacher Certification Course in 2018. Katie can be found at Eternal Yoga in Ashland, KY offering Yoga Sculpt, Yoga Mechanics/Yoga Basics, Beyond Basics Flow, subbing frequently, and a variety of method-based workshops. She has dialed down the group classes and work for other yoga companies to focus more on her own course development, writing, and the 200-hr YTT program.
Teaching Style
I would say my teaching style has evolved tremendously over the years, and yet there are common threads present since I began teaching. I have always had a fascination with subtleties, and students hear my invitation to “notice what you notice” in every class. I hold reverence for both the yoga tradition and the individual, modern practitioner’s needs. I honor the alignment principles taught in my training, and I question everything--cues, movement principles, angles, rotations, life choices…I joke, but not entirely.
Each class with me has a spirit of play, a loving curiosity used to invite students to stretch both their mind and body. I encourage acceptance of unique experience. I use props in creative ways, and often integrate interdisciplinary movements.
In my experience, the practice of yoga leads to greater self-awareness; therefore, yoga is self-awareness training. Through application of movement principles to individual anatomy, inquiry, adaptation, and acceptance, I help students find their unique expression of yoga postures. If I had to give my style a name, it would be Intuitively Adaptive Yoga.
My Life
I’ll save you a biography, and skip to the present day. I’m a busy gal with a lot of interests. I work part-time as a Marketing Director in the financial services industry, raise two children, am a wife to my awesome hubby Jared, and I worship Jesus in my faith community at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington, WV. We like to make time for extended family, friends, working out at Orangetheory Fitness, reading, board games, playing with the kids, and church activities. Mix all that with household chores, teaching yoga, life management, and my plate is quite full. Truly, I’m blessed beyond measure and extremely grateful for the life I get to live. I give glory to God for all accomplishments, and I sincerely hope to bring him glory in all I do.

My Yoga Training & Work
My first yoga training was a 200-hour Hatha Yoga Training through Studio 8 in Huntington, WV. It was the studio where I practiced when I could, and seemed to be a good fit. I completed the study and practice requirements, and immediately began teaching at Eternal Yoga & Pilates in Ashland, KY in the fall of 2016. It was a valuable learning experience to be part of such a growing yoga community. I was honored to have a group of loyal yogis attending multiple classes a week with me, workshops, and the opportunity to sub for a variety of yoga classes. In 2017-2018, I had the opportunity to teach PEL classes for credit at Marshall University. Developing a curriculum for people eager to learn yoga from the foundation up was formative in my planning and instructional skills. In addition to teaching studio and academic yoga classes, I worked privately with clients, and enjoyed the opportunity to research and customize practices to their needs.
I've done continuing education with Trina Altman, creator of Yoga Deconstructed, Judith Hanson Lasater, and Nikki Myers of Yoga for 12-Step Recovery. I plan to pursue my 500-hour certification and fitness certifications in the near future.
Teaching Style
I am a passionate student of anatomy and movement science, and I integrate what I learn through my experience and study into how I teach postures. As a result, I have an appreciation for helping students understand "how" the postures can fit their unique anatomy, and how to move from posture to posture based on their individual needs. My classes are usually intentionally paced to allow students time to settle into a steady and comfortable seat with mind, body, and breath. My classes have been described as well-balanced and gently challenging.
My Life
I am a simple man who enjoys a quiet, slower paced existence surrounded by books, tea, and reruns of "The Office." I get glimpses of that amidst the beautiful life I'm building with my wife Katie and our two tiny humans, Alden & Jewel. I am an active member in my faith community at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, and enjoy my personal devotional study time. I work as a Sales Associate for Orangetheory fitness, and love supporting people on their journey to health in as many facets of my life as possible!
